select from a wide choice of units, so course content may vary between schools and colleg- es, often reflecting local needs and specialisms. The main tip is to look at the size and level of the course and then see what specific modules are being taught. The aviation courses include cabin crew and operations training. The courses are mainly coursework-assessed and are awarded by Pearson.

City & Guilds
City & Guilds is the name of the awarding body, not the qualification. It offers courses including awards, certificates and diplomas, and caters for those just starting in the industry through to those looking to develop leadership skills once on the career ladder. It works with industry leaders including Tui
Travel and Thomas Cook, and offers full-year diploma courses as well as shorter award and certificate qualifications. Much of the above variation in BTECs applies
to City & Guilds too. At Levels 1, 2 and 3, City & Guilds offers qualifications in travel and tourism and airport and airline services including cabin crew. Qualifications can vary; some are NVQ Diplomas, some are NVQ Certificates. Alongside core units, optional units enable students to specialise in particular areas. City & Guilds also offers apprenticeships.

Apprenticeships Travel Services Apprenticeships are available at Levels 2 and 3. Apprenticeships have slightly different names depending on where you live in the UK.
Degrees
Students who study travel and tourism at de- gree or postgraduate level will demonstrate a deeper level of industry understanding (pages 34-35). This means that employers are more likely to see you as potential management material and you may be eligible for one of the industry graduate programmes run by companies such as British Airways or Tui Travel. Travel companies look favourably upon applicants with degrees in subjects such as business, finance, marketing, law or IT, as well as travel and tourism.

Apprenticeship standards in England
have been developed by employer-led Trailblazers, so that apprenticeships are more rigorous and responsive to the needs of employers. Trailblazers are made up of leading large and small employers and professional bodies. Travel Services Apprenticeships are available
in leisure and business, field staff and tour opera- tors (Learning on the job, pages 40-49).
