Kim Schickel is a customer service and operational executive at VisitBritain Shop "
VisitBritainShop.com is VisitBritain’s online shop for
transport passes and theatre and attraction tickets. Those for US, Canada,
Australia, Brazil, Nordics and ‘Rest of World’ are in English, while France, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Japan use the local language. After degrees in industrial engineering and operational management and logistics, I moved from the Netherlands to London to find work. I started at
VisitBritain in London in September 2013.
I applied through a
recruitment agency and my language skills and interest in e-commerce and retail were key factors. I started on the online Dutch
VisitBritain shop and was then given more responsibilities, such as looking after the TfL visitor shop and working with our biggest warehouse. My responsibility is to manage customer service and keep the site up to date. Our retail team consists
of seven nationalities, which makes it enjoyable and interesting.
The shop’s profits go into
VisitBritain’s marketing budget, so my work contributes to the promotion of Britain. I really appreciate the
support and training – when I started I was encouraged to ask every ‘stupid’ question that came into my head. There was even a ‘stupid question hour’ every day. VisitBritain gives me
opportunities to develop, but you have to work for it, which makes your achievements more rewarding. I would like to progress to a management position.
