case studies
Debbie Abrey is course leader for tourism at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London “What I love most about the job is seeing stu- dents progress. Some start at Level 1 and prog- ress up to university standard. It’s really rewarding. We set up the tourism academy as we wanted to establish a working relationship with industry part- ners so students can link their studies to the real world of work. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our learners to gain the employability skills needed for the work environment. They can develop life skills such as time management, team work, professionalism, interview techniques and pub- lic speaking. With the continued growth of the economy, there are a whole host of job opportu- nities out there for students.”
Dr Caroline Scarles is head of Tourism and Events at the University of Surrey “The undergraduate pro- grammes require an A and two Bs at A Level, and they pro- vide students with a thorough academic understanding of travel and tourism. They have been designed in partnership with the industry to ensure the content reflects cutting-edge issues, but also allow students to develop the skills required to be professional graduates as they embark on their careers after graduation. Through our com- mitment to academic learn- ing through collaboration with industry, we deliver modules in partnership with Explore World- wide and IHG and have visiting tutors from Tui Travel, VisitEngland and other organisations.”
