case study
Travel is such an exciting industry to work in . . . I should know,
I’ve been doing it for 21 years! All this time has been spent working within the Gold Medal Travel Group, and what a journey I’ve been on… literally. Never mind my progression from a reservations consultant to the head of aviation, I’ve been lucky enough to visit every continent multiple times, including a trip to Tahiti when I was 16! In what other industry does that happen? My career path has taken
exactly what they want. Gold Medal employs
more than 400 staff at its head office in Preston. Recently acquired by Dubai-based dnata – one of the largest air services providers in the world – the business continues to go from strength to strength, with exciting new opportunities arising each week.
Opportunities range
from travel consultants working in the sales centre and sales representatives on the road, right through to all the usual back-office functions including finance, marketing, IT, product and e-commerce. Many of the team have started in one role and progressed through the business to work in a
different department, even going on to become senior managers and heads of departments. There are some real success stories in this business – with plenty of opportunities for more success stories to be written. Every story starts somewhere, whether as an apprentice or a university graduate. Go for Gold!
many turns over the years. Starting in the business as an apprentice, I was able to experience working in most departments. Over the subsequent years – as I managed various teams in our sales centre – I developed an interest in aviation, and I kept an eye out for roles becoming available within our aviation department. When a job came up eight years ago I was successful – and I haven’t looked back since.
MARK MITCHELL head of aviation, Gold Medal
