Brenda Cecilia Thomas, 37 Recently completed a two-year HND Tourism Management course at UWSTD Swansea Met- ropolitan and is now studying for a BA (hons) degree. She was runner-up in the Bella Rangel Callan ITT Student of the Year Award “Although having over eight years’ experience in the travel industry, I always felt something was holding me back from progressing. I voiced con- cerns about being a mature, foreign student and mother, but was assured I had everything needed to obtain an HND. My tutors and the university have enabled me to grow and have a greater understanding of the business and what is required to make tourism more sustainable. One of the highlights was my work placement at the National Waterfront Museum as an events intern.”
Lucy Wilcox, 19 Studying for Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism and Introduction to Cabin Crew NCFE Certificate Level 2 at the Cornwall College Group “I joined the Royal Air Force to train as cabin crew, but had to leave after breaking my hip. I still wanted to pursue my goal to become cabin crew so decided to retrain and aim to join the commercial airline sector. The course includes work place- ments and my best was working at Newquay airport for a week as a passenger service agent. I got to meet the Red Arrows, which was very exciting! I’ve en- joyed the course especially the resort reps role play, where you are put in awkward situations that you have to deal with; this gave me more confidence.”
