‘Take Off in Travel’ case studies tell us what they’re up to now...


James Mullen, 21, was doing a Foundation Degree in Travel and Tourism at Southern Regional College in Northern Ireland and gained a distinction. He wanted to work for a tour operator: “I applied for university to complete my top-up honours degree in Travel and Tourism Management. However, I have deferred for one year as I received an offer of full-time employment following my student placement with Brack Tours, based in Newry and Dublin. I spent six months with them while I was studying. I currently have the title of travel planner and IT specialist, dealing with costing and pricing group tours, marketing and


the daily operations of the website. I recently won the Northern Ireland Travel Student of the Year award. Taking the educational route into the industry has helped me develop as a person and provided me with the skills to work in such a competitive industry. Moving from the BTEC level of Travel and Tourism to the foundation degree level was a big change but it was worth it. I worked for three companies – the best experience was the opportunity to work with Brack Tours. I love my job because I get to work with people face to face.”
