the next level
While there is a wealth of opportunities to take travel and tourism courses and work your way up in a business, there are also specialist qualifications for those targeting senior positions within the industry. Professor Graham Miller from the University of Surrey explains more
Every year when Take Off in Travel is published or when I attend World Travel Market, I am amazed at the range of jobs that tourism offers. Most of these are vocational jobs in the
customer-facing side of the industry, and that is what a lot of travel and tourism courses focus on. But there are other jobs in the sector that appeal to those who already have some qualifications under their belts or who want management-level positions. Jobs at the top of the industry are the ones
we focus on at the University of Surrey, and are the roles I prepare my students for. An undergraduate, postgraduate or PhD
degree in tourism management teaches students how to do a practical vocational job and how to think critically about those jobs so that students can identify new and better ways to complete the task. Tourism needs leaders who will think about new ways to do things and not simply repeat what we did previously.

The importance of tourism Tourism is going to be at the centre of many global challenges for the next half a century. As a planet we are going to need to create jobs, generate wealth, feed people, save species and spread cultural and political understanding. Yet at the same time we need to conserve resources, prevent terrorism, stop the spread of diseases and ensure cultures retain their identities. These might seem like huge issues that
have little to do with people taking holidays, but tourism has something to say about all of them and we need people to occupy jobs that use tourism as a way to address these global challenges. Studying tourism at university still battles an image of not being a ‘proper’ subject. Yet, 97% of our students are able to secure employment within six months of graduating and are moving into the very top jobs in the industry. My own university is proud to have educated
