Operations Operations staff ensure the smooth running of all trips before travel and throughout by finding workable solutions to any opera- tional issues that arise, including 24-hour assistance. These issues include schedules, flight and accommodation changes and local emergencies or disasters.


Account Managers On the tour operator or supplier side these can also be called sales managers or business development managers. Their job is to sell to other travel businesses, win new business and make sure sales targets are hit. Usually these managers will look after a region. They will also do training.


Product Managers Product managers have expert knowledge and know the general mar- ket for their area. They are heavily involved in brochure produc- tion, making sure information about the travel products and destinations (online or in

brochures) is properly collated and accu- rate. This includes rates, fares and photo- graphs. Commercially aware, the product team is responsible for the development of products, reviewing and analysing market trends and managing and developing profitability. At a more junior level a product executive will load and maintain product information on to the reservations systems and website, proof-read copy for brochures, manage the photo library and assist with the compilation of information regarding the marketplace and competitors.


Purchasing Roles in purchasing, contracting and procurement are all based around buying. Contracting and purchasing roles usu- ally involve negotiating and working with suppliers. Tour operators or airlines have contracting and purchasing staff that secure the best rates for their company, make sure the supplier is the best fit for their business and then ensure it delivers on its side of the contract. As well as good business skills, it helps if you can speak another language. The procurement role manages all of a company’s bulk purchases – whether this is stationery, tow- els or working with someone on the initial deal with a supplier.
