learning on the job
Gareth Chilton, 23 is a lead guide at Celtic Quest Coasteering in Pembrokeshire “I joined Celtic Quest Coasteering in 2012. I liked the look of the company’s website and I’ve always enjoyed playing in the sea, whether swimming, sailing or surfing. Coasteering, often described as extreme rock pooling, involves exploring a stretch of coastline by rock hopping, swimming, scramble climbing, cliff jumping and more. Learning to be a guide on the job is
great as you are in real-life situations all the time, rather than training elsewhere and having to adapt that learning to make it apply to your role. I’ve learnt a massive amount, including lifesaving and safety, team management, sales and marketing product testing and purchasing, time management and customer satisfaction.”

Brandon Payne, 21 is a second-year apprentice at DFDS Seaways, a job that has taken him to sea and to 10 Downing Street “Having seen my father climb through the ranks in the ferry industry, it seemed like the perfect career path for me after my GCSEs. The DFDS Seaways apprenticeship provides me with the opportunity to learn about the industry while gaining qualifications. I joined DFDS two years ago and have been gaining hands-on experience alongside college studies. I am currently a deck rating. This involves maintaining passenger areas, tying in and casting off, directing traffic into the car deck and navigating the ship. Recently my role took me to 10 Downing Street to meet chancellor George Osborne to talk about the apprenticeship. My goal is to become a captain within the next 10 years.”
