Exercise IRON SKIRMISH 4
By Warrant Officer Class 1 Carl Milburn
Exercise IRON SKIRMISH is an annual exercise intended to develop Battlecraft Syllabus (BCS) and Operational Information Management (OIM) Skills of AGC (SPS) personnel from across 3 (United Kingdom) Division.
Developing the Deployed Skills of our Personnel
Lieutenant Colonel Neil Drapper, Commander SPS 3 Div, directed that focus must be placed on the further development of Operational Information Management Skills to address a significant training deficiency that has been highlighted and to build on the efforts of branch staff to address these deficiencies during previous iterations of this important annual training serial.
2022 has been an extremely busy year for the Iron Division with personnel deploying thoughout the course of the year. Prioritisation of this SPS exercise on the Div forecast of events is always a challenge for the organisers of Ex IRON SKIRMISH. This year the overall running of the exercise fell to the SPS Branch of 12 Armoured Brigade Combat Team, led by Major Jess Beck (Ex Director), supported by Warrant Officer Class One Carl Milburn (Senior Military Instructor) and Warrant Officer Class One Jason Janes (Ex Sgt Maj). Due to a clash with other unscheduled Div commitments, the originally planned exercise was delayed until September and transformed into more of a 5-day classroom-based course.
Delivering Excellence
Forty two participants, including Junior Officers and Soldiers, from across the Division were split into 2 syndicates, with training taking place at the Bowman training facility at the Royal School of Artillery, Larkhill and lecture facilities on Ward Barracks, Bulford. Captain Jamie Hughes (RAO, 26 Engr Regt) opened the course with a lesson on the Combat Estimate process setting the scene and the standard for the weeks learning. This was followed by an OIM roles and responsibilities brief delivered by Corporal Harriet Thompson (26 Engr Regt) whose brief focused on the deployed role. Sergeant Vilas Jain (KRH) delivered a comprehensive lesson and practical exercise on the important subject of Classified Material Handling. Sergeant Josh Sykes (HQ 1 Div) and Capt Neil Dicken (1 Regt RLC) brought a wealth of instructional experience to the exercise. Sergeant Sykes delivered well received lessons and practical exercises in Voice Procedure and CBRN and Captain Dicken shared his years of experience in fields of Navigation and Military Map Marking, with his training culminating in the completion of an ITR 5 Navigation Exercise over the local training area.
