Basketball Corporal Georgina Sweeney

October saw the finals of 2022’s Inter-Corps Championships held at the Prince William of Gloucester Barracks, Grantham. The AGC Female team won taking the trophy; a feat that had not happened in 11 years. The success witnessed on the day was truly ‘the tip of the iceberg’ as the time and dedication put into supporting the team to this victory started months prior.

USA Basketball Tour April 2022 The AGC Basketball team ventured on a tour of New York and Washington; a fantastic opportunity that provoked interest in the sport and great team cohesion. Time was also spent harnessing the fundamentals and basic skills with the idea of implementing these at the Inter-Corps later in the year.

Basketball Training Week Colchester The week before the competition, AGC Basketball held a training and selection week. The training was intense coached by Captain Henry Owen, who applied the basic principles of the game and his commitment and passion transformed a group of individuals into a tight knit team. For the first time in years, the AGC female team had a team with a full bench and Corporal Georgina Sweeney appointed as Captain.

Competition Nerves

Arriving at the Prince of Gloucester Barracks on Sunday October 9th 2022, the team were nervously anticipating the upcoming game of the tournament, in which the AGC Females were faced with playing the favourites to win: the RLC Females.

The first game went according to plan, the AGC female team secured a win 37- 29.

Throughout the competition week, the AGC females built strong friendships with each other off court and this mutual respect filtered into their game play.

Here Again Finally After all the hard work, dedication, support, and training, the AGC females found themselves in the finals of the competition and facing the RLC. The team was full of highly motivated females who were not only rooting for themselves but for their team members. Although the game was tough at halftime, the score was tied. In the final quarter with a score nail bitingly close at 29-26 it was a three pointer that demoralised the opponent team, finishing the final at 32-28.

Final word AGC Basketball is a group of people who come together, dedicating their time and energy to a sport they love. It is not about who is the better team, but more about which team is willing to play harder, shout louder and go further. A great team is one which has a space for everyone and this year that was the AGC Female Team.
