1 Deep Reconnaissance Strike Brigade Combat Team
By Warrant Officer Class 2 Elaine O’Hara-Styles and Corporal Ian Cashmore Amalgamation
1 Deep Reconnaissance Strike Brigade Combat Team (1 DRS BCT) was created by the amalgamation of 1 Armoured Infantry Brigade (1 AI Bde) and 1 Artillery Brigade (1 Arty Bde) on 1 Jul 22. The administrative challenge of the amalgamation in addition to the SPS Detachment restructuring under PACR and a new SPS Branch resulted in a turbulent few months for all involved.
The hard work and dedication of the MPAs has resulted in 1 DRS CBT benefitting from a very competent SPS Detachment ready to administer to HQ staff in barracks and deploy on Ex CERBERUS and Ex WAR FIGHTER in MPA and IHub roles.
Aqua park day out
After the formation of 1DRS, the SPS team took time out of the office to go to the New Forest Water Park and take on the Aqua park Poseidon. This was spearheaded by Cpl Shannon Gee who arranged the activity and meal. As we arrived, we had the choice to hire a wet suit or not, the popular consensus was to get them, great decision by all as the water
was pretty chilly, despite being assured by the lifeguard that the water would be warm…
..it wasn’t.
Once we had all squeezed into the damp wetsuits and put life jackets on, we watch a safety video which highlighted we were not allowed to push each other in to the water on purpose…
..hmmm challenge accepted. We had a one-hour timeslot to take on the blob, trampolines, wiggle discs, hurdles, monkey bars, domes, huggers, planks and the high ledge. Cpl Shannon Gee was first in the water, which was in actual fact freezing, slowly followed by the rest of us one by one. From there on it was a free for all with most of us trying our best to navigate various parts of the inflatable course and failing in spectacular fashion. Points to highlight were Cpl Daniel May somersaulting off the high ledge, LCpl Claudia Glass being thrown into the air off the launch pad by Sgt Nathan Chadwick and Cpl Daniel May and Cpl Shannon Gee stopping anyone climbing out of the water by utilising her toes in people’s faces.
After we had exhausted all the apparatus and ourselves it was off to Salisbury for a “Cheeky Nando’s”. Unfortunately, by the time we got there it was fully booked, so a last-minute change to Weatherspoon’s was in order. Those who couldn’t attend the Aquapark joined us for the meal, which was a great time to enjoy each other’s company without the pressures of the working day and dreary (as offices were being renovated and covered in plastic sheeting) environment of the Bde HQ.
The day enabled the 2 separate detachments and new personnel to come together, work with their strengths and become a very highly capable Bde asset.
