Exercise LIONS LANDING By Corporal Harry Scott

Portsmouth to Normandy The first stop on day one was the Map Room at Southwick Park studying the plans for the Allied invasion where there a quick discussion of the mission, weather, and deception plans before moving onto the D-Day Museum in Portsmouth. Here we had a chance to explore a landing craft and experience the conditions before our own journey across the Channel (a much smoother and drier voyage than on D-Day)!
Sword Beach – Provost Day 2 began by examining the invasion, starting with the coup de main landings and assault on Pegasus Bridge. Followed by a journey to Sword Beach discussing the Military Provost Staff role of detention and handling of Captured Persons and Prisoners of War on the beach. Next, we visited Hillman Command Post discussing the role of Military Provost Guard Service and the protection and guarding of vulnerable points.

We visited Douvres radar station, studying the role of the Staff and Personnel Support and the importance of storing vast amounts of cash and the most important factor - paying soldiers! The bunkers of Douvres were used by the Allies to store millions of pounds. Next was the visit to Arromanches starting with a museum visit focussing on the Mulberry Harbour followed by discussing the role of the Educational
City of Caen.
and Training Services and the importance of education and training to soldiers and officers throughout the war. The final stop of the day was the city of Caen. Here we examined the role of the Army Legal Services discussing the legal issues caused by the campaigns in the Battle of Caen.
Caen – Provost
Day 4 started in the city of Bayeux, discussing the role of Royal Military Police focussing on mobility support, traffic posts and policing the force. The Battlefield Study finished off with visits to the Bayeux British War Graves Cemetery, Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc.
The battlefield study tour was a fantastic opportunity to learn about the different branches and roles within the Corps whilst enjoying the lovely French weather!
