Volleyball By Sergeant Emmanuel Nartey

Every year, something fantastic happens with the Corps volleyball team and for 2022, it was the warm weather overseas training camp in Cyprus.

T

he management team welcomed a new Chairman, Lieutenant Colonel Des Mhere, Major Felix Osei-Kuffour as Secretary and Warrant Officer Class 2 Sai Wailutu as

Manageress.

Following the flight from RAF Brize Norton to Episkopi, the team took a day of acclimatisation and the security briefs, before stepping onto the court in the Episkopi Gym Sports Hall for an intense double session designed to identify and categorise potential players for the main teams. Led by Head Coach, Warrant Officer Class 2 Alex Menya MBE, the court business helped focus minds on the real intent of the tour – sharpening our skills.

The next day saw the three team groups take on a reasonably competent 1LANCS team in a series of 3 matches at the Episkopi Gym Sports Hall. The senior men ran out as strong winners in the first match with straight sets win. With the confirmation of where the senior team levels were, it was time for the developmental team to pit their wits against a determined 1LANCS team, returning a very entertaining 2-1 win. Following the second match, it was the ladies’ team

to take on the 1 LANCS men’s team who proved to be a competitive side.

A well-deserved day of rest and recuperation saw an early start on the road north to the Turkish side of the island for a boat ride exclusive to the touring party. The boat ride was the ideal tranquil place to get the team to bond further and provided an isolated space away from it all for uninterrupted intra-socialising. The team enjoyed a dip in clear blue sea waters and a scrumptious meal onboard the boat amid plenty of jostling for who is the better DJ!

It was back on court the next day following what was an extended journey back, which included a stopover on the UN base at Ledra Palace in Nicosia where the team were guided through the UK’s UNFICYP role on the island. It was another rewarding and informative session on the court in Episkopi; this time to prepare the senior team for the friendly game against the Cyprus National Guard team in Nicosia.
