I had the privilege of taking part in the AGC Men’s Football Tour which took place in Gibraltar. It had been 9 years since the last tour and spirits were high as the team landed on a hot Monday morning with temperatures at 25 degrees.


D


etermined to maintain high standards and acclimatise to the weather, training began in the sweltering heat which rocketed to over 30 degrees.


We trained regularly and took part in other activities such as ziplining, cliff diving, abseiling and paddle boarding over the course of our stay. It took a show of great courage and bravery, overcoming my fears in taking up some of these activities.


Two highlights of the Tour; the opportunity to train in the Victoria


stadium which serves as the Gibraltar National stadium. It was an honour to train on the ground where many international football players have played on during international games.


The team were also able to have a tour of the WW2 tunnels in the rock of Gibraltar and learnt about the intriguing history of Operation Tracer and the plan which was put together in the case of the rock being taken by the Germans during the war.


Our first game was against Europa Point FC who play in the top premier senior


league of Gibraltar. Although the AGC Team were still getting used to playing in the heat, we managed to put on a great performance and won the match 4-3.


We capped our tour with a final game against the Gibraltar Regiment football team which comprised of HMS Elizabeth Football team players who were somewhat a strong opponent to play. We ended the game with a 3-3 draw which is a good result in relation to the circumstance and the weather in which it took place.
