Netball By Lieutenant Colonel Lorraine Thomas
Netball is generally considered to be a non-contact sport, meaning non-netball players think of it as an easy, gentle, calm game but it is so much more than that. My role over the years has taken me from player to coach and manager (with a lot of help from my fellow officials and players), and now Chairperson. This means that I dedicate a large amount of personal time when we train, in match preparation, competitions, tours and giving the team support both in their professional and sporting lives.

hat I love about the AGC Warriors is that through sport, I see players develop their life skills and become confident in their work roles. Netball matches are not just won on the practice court, as a Mental Health advocate and international trainer, it fosters positive mental characteristics such as:
Player engagement and motivation. Motivated players train harder, work through difficulties and maintain their commitment making it a more enjoyable experience.
Working strategically and accurately as a team. This is imperative to winning games of netball with bags of team spirit.
•
Being competitive. It is always going to stand you in good stead, because you want to train and get better. If you’re competitive, you love the game, rather than doing it for the sake of it.
•
Belief. This comes when you have done the work beforehand and will give you confidence. Putting the work in gives you the drive to succeed and mental strength to believe you can win.
•
Creativity. Netball is a pretty simple game, its straightforward, but if you want to get to the next
level, then I think you need to be a forward thinker and be creative when you play the game.
•
Determination. I think you have to continually strive for your best performance and want the best for your team, regardless of the circumstances and results, especially in those fast and furious matches. That determination to excel is key, and you can always push yourself to give more.
•
Confidence and Passion. There is a lot to be said about a team or a player that goes out with confidence and belief and this is infectious. It will always stand you in good stead, giving you the competitive edge. If you are competitive, you will love the game and it’s the competitive spirit that keeps you going, along with a passion to put your best foot forward, to get the turnovers, to get the shots in and pass the ball to your team-mates. If you’ve got that passion then you will always be there at training and you’ll be a real team player, on the court, in your military career and life!
Good luck for the forthcoming season AGC Warriors and if this has got your interest, then come and join us, just like Pte Keicha Colton-Palmer who hasn’t looked back.
You will find us on the Social Media platforms and I look forward to meeting you.
