in and around Monte Cassino and concluded in Rome, looking at the capital’s capture.
The passing of HM Queen Elizabeth II and activation of Op LONDON BRIDGE saw both legal support and participation. Lawyers at HQ LONDIST and SJC(UK) ensured that the legal aspects of the ceremonial duties and MACA tasks were addressed and SO3 Legal LONDIST, Captain Kirby Owens had the honour of forming part of the ceremony, leading a contingent of AGC troops.
Throughout 2022, ALS officers have supported the Army’s contribution to wider HMG operations including the response to cross-channel migration under Op ISOTROPE, the continued national effort to deal with COVID under Op RESCRIPT and the hosting of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham under Op UNITY.
Operational Law (Op Law)
ALS officers have been deployed on standing and short notice deployments providing operational legal advice to manage legal and operational risk.
In the Middle East, lawyers deployed on Op SHADER; the UK’s contribution to the Coalition fight against Da’esh: Op INHERENT RESOLVE. LEGADs in Baghdad provide a spectrum of support to operations, including the delivery of training, advice and mentoring to the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service.
In Africa, the Op NEWCOMBE deployed LEGAD in Mali was responsible for providing advice to the Long Range Recognisance Group (LRRG), a CH47 detachment in Gao, as well as Comd NEWCOMBE in Bamako. Advice ranged from the strategic (dealing with UK influence in the UN and with partner nations) to the tactical (advising on searches, detention and shooting incident reviews).
On mainland Europe, the ALS deployed a Captain at short notice in March as the legal advisor to 104 Theatre Sustainment Brigade on Op INTERLINK: the United Kingdom’s mission to establish the International Donor Coordination Centre (IDCC). With direct links into the Ukrainian Armed

Forces, the IDCC was instrumental in ensuring that ever- increasing donations were delivered to the Ukrainian Armed Forces as effectively as possible. Legal advice covered a range of issues as broad as the offers of support to Ukraine.
In the UK, ALS officers supported 11 Security Force Assistance Brigade as part of Op INTERFLEX to deliver training to Ukrainian recruits, ensuring that the British Army’s commitment to operating within the law – so essential to our own licence to operate – is inculcated within training delivered to Ukrainian forces.
Service Prosecuting Authority Officers attended the prestigious Advanced Advocacy Course at Keble College, Oxford. This is a regular fixture in the diary and places are sought after amongst civilian practitioners. It is reflective of the high quality of tri-service prosecutors that they are regularly invited to participate.
Sport and Adventurous Training After a COVID-enforced hiatus, the ALS skiing expedition, Ex TIGER WHITE BEAGLE, deployed at the end of January 2022. This saw 16 ALS officers undertake alpine Ski Foundation 1 and 2 training in Arinsal, Andorra. This was an immensely successful and enjoyable exercise that delivered challenging training and an opportunity to welcome our new officers into the organisation.
Ex VELO JUSTICE, the inaugural ALS road cycling expedition, deployed in July with participants resplendent in flattering ALS livery.

A busy and productive year will give way to 2023, during which we will take pride in celebrating our 75th anniversary.
