By Lieutenant Colonel Toni Berry

The first annual AGC Pre-Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) Instructor Cadre was conducted at Worthy Down in June 2022.

t was attended by eight talented Corporals and Sergeants from across the SPS, RMP and MPS with an aspiration to attend the RMAS Instructor Cadre in the next 12 to 36 months, all with the hope of being successfully selected for the prestigious position of RMAS SSgt Instructor at the highest regarded world class training academy. The AGC Pre-Cadre took place over four days at the Defence College of Logistics, Policing and Administration (DCLPA) and required the candidates to carry out pre-assessment preparation to demonstrate the necessary commitment associated with the role of being a RMAS SSgt Instructor. These are instructors who uphold the very highest standards and traditions of their profession and cap badge, who will inspire future officer leaders with the values, professionalism and experiences of their own service ensuring RMAS maintains its reputation as the British Army’s centre of leadership excellence.

The AGC Pre-Cadre is designed to put candidates under pressure, and to be educational, allowing for areas of reflection and development before attending the RMAS Cadre at Sandhurst. Candidates were assessed by previous RMAS SSgt Instructors and Captain Scott Munro SPS, a current RMAS Platoon Commander (Captain Brooklyn Girdlestone SPS) and SSgt Instructor (Staff Sergeant Grieves SDG) whilst delivering various lessons including fieldcraft, rifle, CBRN, BCD and drill. They received briefs from recent RMAS Cadre staff including Captain Marc Smith RMP and WO2 Cally-Jay Brunton QARANC on the RMAS Cadre itself and how best to prepare themselves to ensure they arrived fit, credible, and competitive against their wider army peers. The candidates were given the facts and opportunity to ask questions before reflecting on their own ambition and development before attending the RMAS Cadre. The overall aim of the AGC Pre-RMAS Cadre was to give the candidates the highest chance of success.
