Exercise ARGENT John O’connor Memorial Ride

By Warrant Officer Class 2 Craig Turner-James

On the 1 April 1997, Parliament announced the pilot scheme of the Military Provost Guard Service, which afforded 118 SP to be assigned to four Units (HQ Wilton, Chilwell, Donnington & Chicksands) within the UK and to undertake the armed & unarmed guarding role.

E

x ARGENT was an arduous MPGS event where a team of 15 cyclists and 4 Support staff of MPGS personnel, cycled a route that encompassed a visit to each of the original four units celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Cap-Badge. A fraternal grant was successfully secured and gratefully appreciated, contributing to ensuring that the team had correct and comfortable clothing to undertake the demanding but rewarding challenge.

From the 19th to 23rd July 22 the group of cyclists set off from Chetwynd Barracks and headed to MOD Donnington. On from there they headed to Warwickshire where they spent a night at Lea Marston Hotel which was a nice and welcomed treat for the group and the facilities were fully maximised and enjoyed by all. The next day saw an early start to cycling and a stop off at Chicksands nature reserves and then fuelling up on cakes and coffee in a local cafe. Unfortunately, at this point, the team lost a member through injury who could no longer carry on with his journey.

After a comfortable rest break at Chicksands the teams set off towards Warminster on the longest of all the days. Only a couple of miles from Warminster the heavens opened, and all cyclists got soaked to the bone, but this did not dampen their spirits. The final leg took them to DSPG Southwick Park via Wilton which was the final site to visit out of the 4 original MPGS Units. The teams arrived and were greeted and applauded by the cohort as both teams completed what was a momentous task.

The Cycling Team, taking a well-earned break at the old site of HQ Land Command Wilton.

DSPG Southwick Park were holding a Provost Day celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of her Majesty the Queen, the 75th Anniversary of the granting of the Royal Prefix to the Royal Military Police, the 116th Anniversary of the Military Provost Staff, the 25th Anniversary of the MPGS, the 30th Anniversary of the AGC, and the capabilities and achievements of the entire Provost Family.

A successful event that was enjoyed by all those in attendance. .
