What is different about this book? It’s about university


Access EAP: Foundations is based on real student life and prepares you for many of the tasks that you will face while doing a degree at an English-speaking university. It shows what life is like at university by introducing three students at the beginning of the first semester at Gateway University in Summerford, somewhere in the UK. Each unit follows their progress as they have conversations and discussions, listen to lectures, read texts, work on assignments and make choices about how to study.


The themes


Each unit has a theme relating to the early weeks of study at a university and explores what the lecturers will expect from you at this stage in the academic year. You will develop the language you need to meet these expectations, for example, comparing ideas, explaining cause–effect relationships and interpreting data in tables and graphs, as well as writing assignments and e-mails and joining in discussions. We have adapted reading and listening texts that are really used at university, so that you can practise study strategies and develop vocabulary and grammar patterns that you can use when you start your academic studies.


The lessons


There are ten units in the book, with each unit divided into five lessons. The first lesson in each unit is quite easy and often introduces an aspect of Gateway University such as the campus map, the library, the history of the university or the students’ union. We have linked the listening, reading, speaking and writing tasks together around each theme, just as they are at university. The three students have regular conversations to discuss aspects of their studies and how they feel about them, so that you can learn about what to expect when you are at university. There are also regular tasks in each lesson to develop your ability to think critically and to study effectively.


An important part of each lesson is the self study task, which often helps you to develop the vocabulary, grammar and skills introduced in the lesson. To help you to build up your vocabulary, there are lists of key words from the texts which are useful for academic study, and there are regular tasks to help you to understand, learn and practise these key words. You will learn the important grammar patterns that are needed for understanding and producing academic texts. This means that you will learn a lot about nouns and noun phrases rather than verbs. You will also learn how to write good texts by moving from general to specific and from what is familiar to what is new. These aspects of academic grammar are quite different from general English, but they are essential for understanding academic style.


Progress


Access EAP: Foundations is designed to help you to make progress, to achieve a higher level of language and study skills. The tasks and texts start with things that you know, but they become more challenging in the later lessons, leading to a practice exam at the end. However, you will meet the same key ideas and key language in different lessons, helping you to remember them as you work through the book.
