Unit 8, Lesson 5, Task 3

DR MALIK: Guy, I really like this. This is so much better than your other stuff. You’ve really thought about this. I like your explanation of how the co-op’s principles are helping it to become more competitive again.

GUY: Really? I was a bit worried that I was off topic.

DR MALIK: No, it’s really interesting, but I’ll say more about that in a bit – perhaps you could expand your last paragraph, maybe more examples. And write more about different ethical concerns.

GUY: How do you mean – examples of ...?

DR MALIK: Well, just go round a co-op store and note some of the goods on sale that are examples of fair trade, environmental standards, and so on – read the labels. Can you do that?

GUY: Oh yes! I work there some nights, stacking shelves for the next morning’s business.

DR MALIK: Great. But look at the competitors as well. Because they’re getting into ethical trading, too.

GUY: Like a mini survey?

DR MALIK: Exactly. The services are important, as well: insurance, banking, travel agencies. They’ve got big ethical concerns. Check them out. There should be plenty of information for customers online.

Oh, don’t forget ... what sources did you use? You need to put them in your essay; there’s only one here at the moment.

GUY: Yes, of course, I’ll do that. I got a couple of books from the library, but they were published in the 90s. They explained about the co-op principles and about the competition from big supermarket companies. But I wanted to know about now, today ... erm, to be honest, I was a bit worried by the title I chose from your list – you know, about the decline – because, as I got into it, I realized that the decline isn’t the whole story. I know that the Summerford co-op is doing very well. I talked to the manager; he’s doing an MBA. He knows a lot about ethical trading. He gave me some more up-to- date journal references.

DR MALIK: Well, so you didn’t like my title? Haha! Good, I like to see a bit of critical thinking in my students. Maybe we can change the title. You’re right, it’s getting a bit out of date. How about: What factors contributed to the decline of the co-operative movement in the UK in the 20th

century, and will it survive in the 21st ?

Guy, you’re heading for an A on this assignment if you can develop the ideas at the end. You might think about this area, I mean co-operatives and ethical trading, for your honours dissertation1

. Unit 9, Lesson 3, Task 2

GUY: It’s obvious, Chen, the main language on the Internet is English. Everyone knows that. English is the global language. It’s everywhere. Look at pop music and films and sport ...

CHEN: … Uh huh, and science and technology and business. I know, 226 ACCESS EAP: Foundations
