GUY: No, No. Er ... I’m just not good with computer stuff. Maybe you should slow down a bit.
MAYSOUN: But the slides are good: very clear. They help to understand some of your points. I think the main problem is how you speak.
GUY: Yes, you need to look at us – so you know from our faces if we can understand.
MAYSOUN: And you should say ‘good evening’ or something and tell us your name and topic. Chen, you seemed to be reading the whole presentation.
CHEN: Yes, I know I have to memorize it, but I couldn’t manage that.
MAYSOUN: That’s the problem! If you read, your mind is thinking just about reading. It isn’t thinking about explaining. Your words come out very flat and there’s no emphasis in your voice.
CHEN: I don’t know how to do that. My speaking is so bad.
GUY: No! Not true! You always explain stuff very clearly to me when you help me with my computer.
MAYSOUN: Why don’t you put your text away and just explain it from the slides?
Unit 7, Lesson 3, Task 4 CHEN: Right, hello. Good evening. My name’s Chen Zhiqiang, and I’m going to talk about malware. First, Er ... what is it? Er ... it’s some code that gets into a computer system but you don’t know. It’s hidden. And it’s never good; sometimes it’s dangerous. So do you ... have you ever had a problem with a virus? That’s malware.
OK. There are three main kinds of malware: viruses, worms and Trojan horses, but they are different. Viruses came first in computer history. They can copy themselves inside the computer, but only .... but first they need to get into the system. That’s usually by an infected USB drive, etc. Viruses can carry some bad code, for example to delete your hard drive. There are two types of virus, and it depends on what they do. One kind, resident viruses, live in the memory and infect files when they are loaded but ... er ... non-resident viruses go looking for files to infect.
The next one, worms, are more clever. They don’t need ... er, they can get from one computer to another by themselves. They can send e-mails or spam from the system and the ... er ... person, the operator knows nothing about what’s going on.
Finally, a Trojan horse is really bad. It usually looks useful, but has hostile code. People download it because they don’t know what’s in it. Here, an example was a free screensaver but when people downloaded it, it was able to do things without those people, operators ... they didn’t know. A Trojan horse can even let someone else see what you’re doing, or can control your computer.
I enjoyed that. OK, I see what you mean. More interesting, but it’s not very academic! And I forgot some stuff.
