Task 3 Understanding data
In Task 2 of the Reading to Write exam, you were given two tables of data and asked to complete a report. From Unit 9, you should remember that a report of data contains general claims supported by evidence from the data. The tables contain more detail than you need for the report. You also had to interpret the data, e.g., by calculating the percentage change in sales from one year to the next.
Look at the report below. For each letter a–j, highlight where the answer can be found in the tables.
Fairtrade sales
Although there was a global recession in 2008, consumers spent an estimated 2.5 billion pounds on Fairtrade products, increasing the volume of sales worldwide by (a) 22%. In the UK, the largest growth in sales between 2007 and 2008 was for Fairtrade (b) tea (116%) and (c) cotton (124%). The products with the highest sales volumes are Fairtrade (d) coffee and (e) bananas. Sales of these products grew by 17% and 23%, respectively.
The largest markets for Fairtrade products continued to grow, with sales increasing by 43% in (f) the United Kingdom and 10% in (g) the United States. In other established markets such as (h) Canada and (i) Germany, the growth rate of sales was between 50% and 70%, while in newer markets, e.g., (j) Australia and New Zealand, (k) Norway and (l) Sweden, growth was even stronger, with a rate of over 70%.
