hydrology, one for ecology and one for microbiology.
CHEN: That’s cool! My vocab notebook’s a mess. It’s nearly full and I can’t find the words I want. But with different books for different modules, there’s more space and you’ve got some basic organization. I think I should write mine again, in separate books. How do you organize each book? I mean, by topic or what?
MAYSOUN: Alphabet. Each book has four pages for each letter of the alphabet. It’s enough for now, but some pages are filling up fast.
CHEN: I think I’ll start a new book for each module, like you. But I’ll still write the words in the order I find them, a new page for each day. If I want to find words, I can usually remember when I wrote them. But maybe this is just a waste of time – I’ve got another assignment to prepare!
GUY: No! If you do it – I mean reorganize them, it’ll be good. It’s – like – a good way to revise them. But why not write on cards? Then you can change the way you organize the words any time you want.
CHEN: I see: flexibility. Even better! I can set up a database. Then I don’t need to buy notebooks or cards. This is great!
GUY: Have you got a dictionary about computing to help you? I got a business dictionary last year and it was great for checking technical terms. The bookshop’s got some new specialist dictionaries. We could go and have a look.
CHEN: Hey! Before we go, can I ask a favour? I have to give a presentation soon. Can I practise with you both later this week?
MAYSOUN: Fine. Is Thursday evening OK? I work late on Thursdays. CHEN: Yes, sure. But where can we go? I’ve got to do PowerPoint.
GUY: I’ll ask Dr Malik if I can use a Management seminar room. I’ll tell him I need to practise presentation skills with some other students. CHEN: Good thinking, Guy!
Unit 5, Lesson 5, Task 5
LIBRARIAN: Now, let’s think about how you can find information in the library. What subjects are you studying? MAYSOUN: The environment. LIBRARIAN: OK, can you be a bit more specific? MAYSOUN: Water in the environment?
LIBRARIAN: OK, that’s a good topic. So how could you find information in the library about this topic – water in the environment? Well, our library uses the Dewey Decimal system. Dewey was the name of the man who invented this system, and it’s a decimal system, which means it’s based on decimal numbers. Each book or journal in our library has a number, and the books are stored on the library shelves in order of those numbers. So you just need to know the number of the book you want to read and you can find it.
The Dewey Decimal system has ten very general categories such as ACCESS EAP: Foundations 209 Key words
