Task 5 Thinking critically


In Task 5 of the Reading to Write exam, you had to link ideas in the text to your own knowledge and experience.


5.1 For each of the questions below, say what background knowledge you need to be able to answer the question.


a How is buying Fairtrade products different from donating money to a charity such as Oxfam?


b Give two examples to show how members of a producer’s family could benefit from being involved in the Fairtrade movement.


c What are the advantages of selling Fairtrade products in a supermarket compared with selling them in a Fairtrade shop?


5.2 Look at the student answer to question c below. Say why it received no marks.


In the 1970s, Fairtrade products were only available in Fairtrade shops and most consumers did not know about them. In the 1980s, the Fairtrade label was introduced so that Fairtrade coffee could be sold alongside ordinary coffee in shops and supermarkets.


Task 6 Taking notes


Through this course, you have practised taking notes in different formats. You used tables for comparison and contrast, classification diagrams, timelines to show development and cause–effect flow charts. These formats are designed to show the functional relationships between ideas.


In Task 6 of the Reading to Write exam, you were given a set of headings for your notes.

6.2 Look back to Tasks 4 and 5. Some questions relate to the headings in the notes above. Which questions could help you to take notes?


6.3 Use the checklist below to evaluate your notes from Task 6 of the Reading to Write exam. Compare with other students and with the model answer.


• Are the notes mostly in note form? • Are the notes accurate, but not copied word for word from the text?


• Are the notes relevant, with a definition, ways to measure success and factors leading to success?
