Welcome to the October issue of Personal Care Global. We are coming into one of my favourite times of the year when there are so many opportunities to travel to conferences and exhibitions covering this great industry.
This month alone sees SEPAWA in Berlin,
Germany (16-18 October), Cosmetorium in Barcelona, Spain (23-24 October), and the IFSCC Congress in Iguazú Falls, Brazil (14-17 October). As mentioned by IFSCC education committee
chair Perry Romanowski in his interview that starts on page 17, one of the key themes of the 34th Congress are biodiversity and sustainable technologies, something of a specialism in the Brazilian personal care industry. Perry also discusses the burgeoning role of AI
in personal care, something he is acutely aware of in his ‘day job’ as president of US consultancy Element 44, as well as co-author of the best- selling textbook Beginning Cosmetic Chemistry. While he sees some of the AI hype as pure marketing guff – particularly regarding the
potential for custom-made beauty products – he makes the point that chatbot software like ChatGPT can make novice chemists competitive with somebody who has accrued 30 years of knowledge. As Perry explains in these pages, this could
have profound implications for cosmetic chemists - for good or ill. It strikes me as sensible to heed his advice for
cosmetic chemists to learn how to use AI tools to make them a better scientist. As with other modern working practices, they are not going away. Perry will be speaking at in-cosmetics Asia in
Bangkok, Thailand, another upcoming trade show this autumn. Our comprehensive preview of the show (see
page 21), which takes place on 5-7 November, details all the major visitors attractions and new product releases from selected exhibitors. Elsewhere in this issue, there are three
main feature article topics – sustainability, anti-pollution and the skin microbiome – with contributions from companies based in India, China, Denmark, Germany, Spain, the UK and the USA. Enjoy the magazine.
