ANTI-POLLUTION At the end of the application, the metabolic
activity of the cells was quantified as conversion of the MTS salt.
Test system HaCaT cells HaCaT is a spontaneously transformed aneuploid immortal keratinocyte cell line from adult human skin. The cell line was routinely cultured in laboratory in DMEM medium supplemented with glutamine, antibiotics and fetal bovine serum (complete medium).
Test methods Cells from routine culture were seeded into 96 well plates in serum-free DMEM medium and allowed to attach overnight. The day after, cells were exposed to dilutions (0.01 to 1% v/v) of the strawberry active in serum-free medium. As comparison, glycerin at the same
concentration of each strawberry active dilution was prepared and used as third treatment. After 24 hours of exposure to the strawberry active or glycerin, medium from each well was replaced with complete medium without phenol red and the MTS assay was applied to measure cell viability. To analyze the results of the test, an unpaired
t-test was applied to compare the means of two groups (in our case each strawberry active concentration vs the respective glycerin concentration). The tests were performed by LabAnalysis of Casanova Lonati, Italy.
Results The results of the study with the strawberry active are reported in Table 3 and Figure 3. Activity of the cells was normalized on the activity of untreated cells as control group. Fetal bovine serum at 10% v/v was used as
positive control, acting as stimulus for the cells. Cells treated with the strawberry active showed higher activity compared to the unexposed control group and to glycerin. A dose-response trend was found in cells exposed to the strawberry active. The comparison between cells exposed to
the strawberry active and to glycerin showed statistically significant differences in most of the concentration tested.

Conclusion The results of these in vitro studies are very promising and demonstrate the ideal application of the strawberry active in anti-pollution cosmetic products, where an antioxidant action is sought, together with a booster effect on cell vitality. Its effectiveness, together with its ability
to give the cosmetic product a completely natural colour and fragrance, make it the perfect ingredient for a clean beauty routine.
