As the largest organ in the body, human skin is constantly exposed to harmful compounds existing in the surrounding environment as the first-line barrier. Studies have indicated that exposure to


high concentrations of many environmental factors, such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation, outdoor air pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM), heavy metals, gaseous pollutants, such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxides (NOx sulfur oxide (SO2


), ), ozone (O3 ), and indoor air


pollutants (solid fuels consumption), might interrupt the skin’s normal barrier function. The intensity of the pollutants and the


length of exposure might be a contributing factor. Air pollutants are believed to induce or exacerbate a range of skin conditions, such as ageing, inflammatory diseases (atopic dermatitis, cellulitis, and psoriasis), acne, hair loss, and even skin cancers (mainly melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma) through various mechanisms. The interaction between pollutants and the skin might differ based on each agent’s particular characteristics. Furthermore, damaging the skin barrier seems to be closely related to the increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), induction of oxidative stress, activation of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), and inflammatory cytokines.1 Although human skin acts as a biological


shield against pro-oxidative chemicals and physical air pollutants,2


it is essential to support


its innate antioxidant capacity and to increase skin cells’ vitality, to keep it in an optimal physiological state.


The power of nature Nature itself can offer us the solution: there are in fact many compounds in nature with strong antioxidant power, particularly among fruit and vegetables. That is why, for several years now, scientific


research has paid great attention to the benefits of a high intake of fruit and vegetables, since it is inversely related to the incidence of several degenerative diseases, and the importance of a balanced diet in relation to human health has received increased consumer attention worldwide. Strawberries (Fragaria X ananassa, Duch.)


are a rich source of a wide variety of nutritive compounds such as sugars, vitamins, and

minerals, as well as non-nutritive, bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, anthocyanins and phenolic acids. All of these compounds exert a synergistic and cumulative effect on human health promotion and in disease prevention. Strawberry phenolics are indeed able


(i) to detoxify free radicals blocking their production; (ii) to modulate the expression of genes involved in metabolism, cell survival and proliferation and antioxidant defence; and (iii) to protect and repair DNA damage.3 They are ultimately an ideal candidate for


protecting skin cells from cytotoxic effects of both outdoor and indoor pollutants. We have therefore developed and tested Strawberry Hormo Fruit - hereafter referred to as the strawberry active - a concentrated juice, stabilized in glycerin, result of Esperis’ historical experience in research and development of natural ingredients. The exclusive extraction process preserves all the inherent natural properties of the vegetable matrix: it contains a high proportion of phytocomplexes, vitamins, amino acids,


simple sugars and polysaccharides. The product is made in Italy, the origin of


the strawberries is Italian and the fruits are responsibly sourced Furthermore, the glycerin contained in the product is palm-free.
