NYSCC SUPPLIERS’ DAY 2022

NYSCC Suppliers’ Day back to its buzzing best

Tim Probert, Editor – Personal Care Global

What a city. After a relatively low key 2021 event last November, the 43rd Annual NYSCC Suppliers’ Day was back in its traditional slot of May and back to its best. The Jacob K. Javits Convention Centre saw thousands of visitors enjoy the typically productive yet perhaps more relaxed atmosphere that Suppliers’ Day serves up compared to other shows. In keeping with NYSCC’s ethics, Suppliers’ Day

has a heavy focus on education and conference sessions and the World of Chemistry session track offered delegates the chance to get up to speed with global developments. Kline vice-president of strategy and innovation

Sunanda Desai gave a highly informative presentation on personal care ingredients. Desai identified three big trends for the global

personal care ingredients: multifunctionals, local supply and inclusive beauty. The rise of multifunctionals, she said, is expected to boost demand in particular for hyaluronic acid and squalane. The trend for local suppliers was said to

provide a major opportunity for Indian makers of personal care ingredients to capitalise on a market dominated by Western companies (see table). Inclusive beauty, meanwhile, is expected to increase demand for tints and other colour cosmetics plus hair texture products. Looking ahead, Desai said market growth of

at least 2-4% is expected for all types of personal care ingredients until 2026, with colour cosmetics projected to see growth of more than 10%. In terms of regions with the most projected growth, Africa and India are both expected to see around 5%, driven by demand for body care products.

Products showcase On the show floor, AAK Personal Care unveiled a new data package on its shea-based ester Lipex SheaSolve, which showed excellent dispersion characteristics for zinc oxide, which the company said makes it “the new gold standard” for naturally- derived sun care formulations in the future. In addition, recent lifecycle assessment

studies on AAK’s Swedish-grown canola oil shows significant carbon emission advantages versus other canola oil supply chains, making Lipex Bassol C the “go-to plant oil for formulators looking for sustainable and extremely stable solutions for petrochemical emollient replacements”.

AB Specialty Silicones introduced a new line of PEG-free emulsifiers at Suppliers’ Day. Due to its high performance, this innovative technology

could replace the current industry standard by producing both easy to use stable emulsions that comply with international regulations as well as market driven environmental safety initiatives. The product line includes both cyclic and

cyclic free versions that can be used to improve formulations. These PEG-free emulsifiers offer many benefits for improving sensory properties and giving products a light feel. This product line is said to be suitable for skin and hair care applications with compatible options for both W/O and W/S emulsions.

Actives International was on hand to showcase its ingredients that address major skincare needs, such as a healthy skin barrier, troubled skin, even skin tone, and the negative effects of inflammaging. Its ViaPure, ViaFerm and ViaDerm brands are widely recognized, it says, for purity,

efficacy and safety. The company also features dual-effect, plant-

based EcoCeramides from LCS Biotech and several new products from its partners, Contipro and Variati.

Applechem debuted S-Block DZ 100 PDCC, a brand new zinc oxide dispersion designed for clinical sun care products. The company says S-Block DZ 100 PDCC is designed to meet growing consumer demand for multifunctional sun care products combining clinically-validated claims with cleaner ingredients. According to Applechem, the intersection

between clean beauty and clinical treatment has created new product design problems that traditional silicone-based dispersions were not intended to solve. S-Block addresses these issues, it says, by

giving formulators the ability to add consistent broad spectrum mineral SPF protection while moving freely between high performance silicone-based, hydrocarbon-based and clean beauty compliant emulsion and anhydrous systems.

Under the theme “Human. Nature,” BASF introduced inclusive and sustainable solutions for the personal care industry at NYSCC’s Suppliers’ Day.

These included Passport to Textured Hair

Ingredients and Solutions, where BASF Care Creations unveiled the latest chapter of the textured hair journey with new data on hair care portfolio ingredients. Data supports textured
