EDITOR’S COMMENT Taking the lead in naturals

Having just returned from Suppliers’ Day in New York, it was interesting to hear the views of formulators across the Atlantic and how they viewed developments in Europe. One formulator said to me that they always looked to Europe for inspiration in natural formulations, as they believed it to be far in advance of any other region. We can learn so much from looking at other regions, but is also important not to expect that a product can be picked up and dropped into a new market unchanged. Different regions have quirks and preferences, and this is where formulators and marketers can work together. As you will see in this issue, natural products do have a very strong influence over the industry, but consumers expect products to perform exceptionally well. There have been major advances in natural ingredient technology in recent years, and as the review of in-cosmetics Global suggests, there is no sign of the innovations abating.

environmental-friendly ingredients to manufacturers of beauty and healthcare products. Ecovia Renewables, a US- based company, has developed a new platform technology to produce biobased ingredients through a proprietary fermentation process using renewable biomass. It will be combined with Seppic’s expertise in formulation and large-scale production of high- value specialty ingredients.

The two companies have signed a joint development agreement. In addition, Seppic has taken an equity stake in Ecovia Renewables. Seppic and Ecovia Renewables will jointly develop biopolymers that the Seppic Group will market through its global commercial and service organisation that serves customers around the world, for all topical applications on an exclusive basis.
