Play’n GO Chief Commercial Officer, Magnus Olsson, on vision, longevity, and building the most trusted brand in regulated entertainment.
Magnus, Play’n GO celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. What inspired the company’s creation back in 2005, and which early choices shaped its long term success?
Play’n GO was founded by people who were players first. Tey weren’t trying to chase a trend or build a business case — they wanted to build better games. And crucially, they had the conviction to design those games for mobile back in 2005, when “mobile gaming” meant a Nokia phone playing Snake. It was a bold call, and not one anyone looking only through a commercial lens would have made at the time. But those instinct led decisions - choosing mobile, choosing certain types of games, choosing passion over spreadsheets set a foundation that has carried us for two decades.
Who were the key figures involved in establishing Play’n GO, and how have their values influenced the company’s culture today?
Our CEO, Johan Törnqvist, and the founding team defined the culture from day one: long term thinking, creativity, and deep respect for the player. Tose values still guide everything we do as a global entertainment brand. We see ourselves as custodians of something special - not a quick win business. Tat’s why we’ve consistently refused to build certain game types we don’t believe are healthy for players. We’ve walked away from short term revenue many times, but it’s precisely that discipline that’s made us so strong in regulated markets today.
Play’n GO was an early pioneer in mobile gaming. How did that
foresight define your position in the market?
It was a turning point - arguably the turning point. In the mid 2000s, mobile gaming wasn’t even an idea yet. No app stores. No smartphones in every pocket. Most of the industry thought focusing on mobile was at best an extreme long shot. But our founders recognised where technology and player behaviour were heading long before the rest of the market caught up. Tat single decision is one of the biggest reasons Play’n GO is where we are today.
What role has Play’n GO played in shaping the modern online slots landscape, and how has that influence evolved as regulation has tightened globally?
Grid slots are a huge part of our contribution to the industry. At a time when social games and online casino were treated as totally separate worlds, we proved that smart, engaging mechanics from social gaming could enhance regulated casino entertainment — responsibly. As regulation has tightened globally, that combination of creativity and responsibility has become even more important. We’ve shown you can innovate and stay fully aligned with regulatory expectations.
Series such as Book of Dead, Reactoonz and Moon Princess have become landmarks of the iGaming era. What’s the creative philosophy behind building enduring franchises?
For us, a slot game must entertain first. Players should want to return to it because the game itself is satisfying, not because they’re being
