ElEctronic Mfg SErvicES Feeder Finger: Productivity

Enhancing Solutions for SMT Feeders By Bill Hayes, Vice President of Business Development, Feeder Finger

an innovative solution for effectively feeding cut tape components. ATS was founded in 2001, and at that time

the company was focused on Standard Pro 0.08 in. (2 mm) pitch feeders for Quad/Tyco placement platforms. The success of those products fueled the company’s expansion and led to the develop- ment of the cut tape Feeder Finger. Initially de- signed in 2010, full production began in late 2016.

Feeder Finger serves as a problem solver

for SMT manufacturers by designing compo- nent feeder products that work with the indus- try’s leading suppliers. The company’s goal is to help customers by removing common obstacles in SMT manufacturing.

Boosting Efficiency The company’s mission is to design prod-

ucts that reduce costs and improve efficiency on the production floor. With Feeder Finger’s solu- tion attached to existing OEM feeders, users can save cost and eliminate waste by purchas- ing close to the exact number of components re- quired for each job without the concerns of ef-

division of Automation Technical Services (ATS), Feeder Finger has carved out a niche for itself in the SMT market by developing

fectively feeding strips of component tape. Also, Feeder Finger offers a highly efficient way to run prototypes, one-offs and NPI processes that pro- vide near-zero component loss, while running full reel production. “At Feeder Finger we prefer to look at it all

through the prism of productivity. Our products help achieve greater equipment utilization, en- hance throughput with greater levels of efficiency

and enable better use of production hours,” says Kelvin Wiley, president of Feeder Finger. Feeder Finger offers solutions for all major

SMT feeder manufacturers, including Juki, Sam- sung, Yamaha, Panasonic, Siemens, Essemtec, i- Pulse, and ASM. “Our products help to ease the concerns of feeding strip tapes associated with component shortages, while allowing contract manufacturers to purchase only the number of components required for each job,” adds Wiley. ATS launched the Feeder Finger division

more than eight years ago, with the addition of the cut tape Feeder Finger products, designed to increase the efficiency of existing OEM feeders. While production downtime can be the re-

sult of numerous factors, the most common is caused by machine set up and changeover times. By attaching the device to existing pro- duction feeders, load and unload times can be reduced to seconds, allowing operators to get jobs into production much faster than conven- tional feeders.

facturers’ feeders to meet the requirements of today’s contract manufacturers to handle cut
