Why study psychosocial studies at Essex? Psychosocial studies is emerging as a vibrant new critical field which explores the relation between individual and social experience, emotional life, and wider cultural and political identities. It asks how inner and outer worlds, the psychical and the social, coincide, and how best to describe these interactions. You benefit from access to the departmental cultures of Sociology and our Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, both rated at the top of their field in the most recent
Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, December 2008), and an intellectual culture which actively fosters original interdisciplinary work at the borders between sociology and psychodynamic theory.
The psychosocial may be studied for its own sake (as a way of developing knowledge about the construction of human identity and its social interactions), or with the intent of applying psychoanalytic and sociological methods to a particular area of empirical research. Some of our students are considering careers in mental health or social research, and wish to pursue a grounding in psychosocial theory first.
What will I learn? The core modules of this course investigate key theoretical debates in psychosocial studies, psychoanalysis, and sociology, and provide a grounding in psychosocial research methods. You learn how to take account of emotional and unconscious factors in experience, discuss the way knowledge of individual life is constructed and validated, and explore methodological issues in psychoanalysis and sociology. In addition, you choose two modules from a number of more specific options in psychoanalytic studies and sociology, whether this is to deepen your enquiry into psychoanalytic concepts and the theory of object relations, to enhance your understanding
