Each course has seven primary aims and when you successfully complete the course you should be able to demonstrate: knowledge of the aetiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of disease;
knowledge to evaluate critically the advantages, limitations and applications of a range of biomedical techniques;
understanding of selected contemporary issues, critical awareness of current problems in your field and health care provision in general, and knowledge to support understanding of future aspects of biomedical science encountered in the working environment;
understanding of a range of issues relevant to the management of laboratories;
skills to access and critically appraise research findings to develop your own evidence-based practice;
an ability to formulate questions and undertake research of relevance to biomedical scientists in your field; and
a range of key skills including written communication, oral communication, numeracy, information retrieval, problem solving, data analysis and data interpretation.
All modules have a University of Essex supervisor. One third of each MSc course is entirely devoted to a workplace research project.
How are the modules structured? The table below gives the structure of the modules for someone aiming to complete their MSc in three years.

If you are taking Path-specific module 1, you must have taken Immunity in Health and Disease.
How will I learn? You apply and register for each module individually, enabling you to manage your studies to fit in with work and other commitments. To obtain an MSc, you are required to complete nine modules within a minimum of two and a maximum of six years, including a one-year research project in the last year of study, based entirely at your place of work. You need to obtain just one half-day’s release from work per week in order to follow the course, as teaching is scheduled to take place on Mondays only, between 3pm and 8pm*.
