Typical entry requirements The following awards enable direct entry to this course:  BA Therapeutic Communication and Therapeutic Organisations (minimum of Upper Second Class Honours)


 Graduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Approaches (pass with Merit)


 PG Diploma Psychodynamic Counselling or equivalent from another training provider


 If your first language is not English, you would normally be expected to demonstrate English language proficiency to at least the following levels: iBT 88 or IELTS 6.5


Why study psychodynamic counselling at Essex? This new course provides a high-quality clinical qualification in counselling, run by experts in the field. It provides the theoretical knowledge, practical skills and personal development required to take up a professional role as a counsellor.


MA Psychodynamic Counselling includes a placement working as a counsellor under supervision to provide sufficient clinical experience to qualify. British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) accreditation will be applied for as soon as permitted and, if granted, will apply to those pursuing the course from the outset.

What will I learn? This course consists of theoretical seminars, workshops, clinical seminars, and placement experience. There are modules on research and on other approaches. There is a strong emphasis on personal and professional development to prepare you for, and support you in, your clinical role.


How is the course structured? This course runs on Wednesdays. Approximately one further day will also be required for attendance on placement, supervision, and personal therapy.

Assessment takes the form of essays, reflective reports, presentations, dissertation, and placement reports.
