How is the module structured? Ten, three-hour lectures and seminars.

How will I be assessed? This module is assessed by coursework only, part of which is a practical examination: leading a cardiac rehabilitation exercise session.

Physiological and Clinical Assessment in Cardiovascular Disease

Study mode: modular Module length: one term Number of credits: 15 Start date: January 2013 Campus: Colchester

What will I learn? The purpose of this module is to provide you with experience in selection, application and analysis of data from physiological tests applied to healthy and clinical populations. You will be required to demonstrate practical ability and theoretical knowledge regarding physiological assessment.

To pass this module, you must be able to:  perform a risk assessment and carry out appropriate pre-test preparation including informed consent and health screening procedures;

 identify and carry out suitable physiological assessments of healthy and clinical populations;

 discuss the importance of test quality and data interpretation for exercise prescription, goal setting and risk stratification;

 discuss the importance of patient pre-screening and preparation;

 discuss the added value provided by full, respiratory gas exchange analysis during exercise stress testing compared with standard, ECG-monitored stress testing;

 discuss the use of simple bedside, ward-based and non-exercise tests in the diagnosis of cardiovascular disorders.

How is the module structured? Typically each week will involve a short lead-lecture (one hour) followed by a practical session (one and a half hours) and concluding with a discussion of the practical results, quality and applicability (half an hour). You will complete a reflective learning log book throughout the module on which formative feedback will be given in a timetabled tutorial in week 20. The structure will be four three-hour sessions, one week’s reflection, and then four more three-hour sessions followed by the practical examination. You will then have approximately three weeks of reflection to complete your portfolios.

How will I be assessed? This module is assessed by coursework, part of which is a practical exam: exercise testing and clinical examination.

Work-based Learning in Cardiac Rehabilitation

What will I learn? This module is designed for students who are already in employment as allied health professionals, or who wish to gain work experience at our University’s Phase IV Clinic, Phoenix Club.

You will be expected to accumulate a minimum of 40 hours of clinical experience working in either Phase III or Phase IV cardiac rehabilitation programmes. You will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and insight into the programme: history, aims, structure, staffing, finance, recruitment and day-to-day running, and to evaluate the programme in terms of operational guidelines as well as being able to suggest improvements. You will also be required to take an active role in exercise prescription and provision and in delivery of ancillary educational materials to patients.
