| Our Colchester Campus and surrounding area
Compact campus environment Our Colchester Campus was built in the 1960s and the bustling, inter-linked squares were designed by architect Kenneth Capon to encourage academics from different departments to work together. This helped nurture the interdisciplinary nature of teaching and research at Essex.
As the University was conceived as a university town, rather than a single building, it incorporates teaching facilities, student accommodation, shops, banks, a gallery and a theatre, bars and cafés, and sports facilities on one site. Our unique design helps create the friendly and diverse campus atmosphere of which we are extremely proud.
Out and about Famous for being Britain’s oldest recorded town and former Roman capital, Colchester has developed in recent years into a growing town with a thriving culture. The town centre is very popular for shopping and is home to a vibrant street market, every Friday and Saturday. You will never be short of places to relax and Colchester has an extensive range of places to eat, ranging from national chain restaurants to independent eateries.
Colchester’s arts scene has been enhanced by the developments at firstsite, a £16.5 million contemporary visual arts facility, which has a University space where artworks from the Essex
Collection of Art from Latin America (ESCALA) are exhibited. There is also the Mercury Theatre and Colchester Arts Centre, while the popular summer V Festival is less than 30 minutes away at Chelmsford’s Hylands Park. The surrounding countryside has been an inspiration to many famous artists and the East Anglian coastline is easily accessible, with nearby beaches at Frinton, Walton, Clacton and Brightlingsea.
A popular destination for many is the village of Wivenhoe, less than a mile from our campus. It has a lively quayside with pubs and restaurants to suit many tastes and pockets. There is also an active music scene in Wivenhoe, with a range of live music events throughout the year.
Well located Colchester is served by excellent transport links, with the A12 running into London and trains to central London taking only 50 minutes, meaning you can make the most of the capital’s many attractions. Stansted Airport, our gateway to continental Europe, is just a two-hour coach trip direct from our campus (or less than an hour by car), and the ferry port of Harwich is less than 30 minutes by road.
