Valentina Santamaria, MSc Cardiac Rehabilitation student

“I decided to study at Essex after a recommendation from a friend. I also

really liked the look of the course, and was attracted by the practical experience I would be able to gain throughout. The School is extremely organised, ensuring they answer any queries we have promptly, and all of my lecturers and fellow students are very friendly. I have particularly enjoyed Work-Based Learning in Cardiac Rehabilitation and relished the opportunity to have contact with clients at our on-campus cardiac rehabilitation centre, The Phoenix Club.”

Chris Cooper, Professor

Chris arrived at Essex in 1995 when he took up a Wellcome Trust University Award; he became a Professor in 1999. His

research is interdisciplinary, combining the basic science of oxygen with biomedical applications in a range of pathologies. As a biophysicist, he is also interested in new ways of measuring oxygen use by shining light on the body. Via the British Olympic Association, he is currently working with the UK short track speed skating and biathlon teams. Chris currently teaches Membrane Biology, Spectroscopic Investigations in Disease and Drugs in Sport.

Gavin Sandercock, Senior Lecturer

Gavin is the Course Director for MSc Cardiac Rehabilitation. His research interests include functional capacity testing in

cardiac rehabilitation patients and the measurement of autonomic function in chronic heart disease and heart failure patients. He also runs the East of England Healthy Hearts study; currently the UK’s largest children’s fitness survey. He teaches cardiovascular physiology, exercise prescription, clinical research methods and work-based learning in cardiac rehabilitation.

Elena Klenova, Professor

Elena’s research interests are in the field of biomedical science. Specifically, her research focuses on the understanding of the molecular

mechanisms of cancer development. She actively collaborates with NHS doctors to explore how the laboratory findings can be used in the clinic. Elena is the Director of the Essex Biomedical Sciences Institute and Coordinator of the Molecular Medicine Group. Elena is also Course Director for MSc Molecular Medicine. Elena currently teaches molecular biology, cell biology, and several MSc modules.
