Academically outstanding We are an internationally-oriented research intensive university with a commitment to excellence in research and research-led teaching, to the personal development of all our students, and to offering an outstanding campus-based student experience.
Essex is home to several of the country’s leading schools, departments, and centres offering access to the most up-to-date resources for ground-breaking research and innovative teaching. Our research is internationally focused on solving global problems and we take pride in our international reputation, being ranked in the top three per cent in world rankings and ninth in the UK for our research (Research Assessment Exercise, 2008). In 2012 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranked Essex in the top 50 in the world for universities under 50 years old. This was confirmed by Times Higher Education’s own ‘Top 100 under 50’, ranking Essex 20th in the world and fifth in the United Kingdom.
Friendly campus environments Founded in 1964, when we opened our doors to a cohort of just 122 students at Wivenhoe Park in Colchester, our University has grown in both recognition and size. We now have more than 11,000 students studying at our three campuses across Essex in Colchester, Loughton and Southend.
We are the UK’s most internationally-diverse campus university, with 40 per cent of our students from outside the UK from more than 130 countries. Our academic departments span the humanities, social sciences, science and engineering, and law and management.
Student satisfaction We are in the top 20 for student satisfaction, amongst English mainstream universities, according to the most recent National Student Survey (2011). Eighty-eight per cent of our students expressed overall satisfaction with their course. In 2012 we took part in the
Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey. Of all our taught postgraduates who responded to the survey, 88 per cent said their teaching and learning with us had met or exceeded their expectations, while 89 per cent said that their overall experience as a postgraduate with us had met or exceeded their expectations. The most recent Postgraduate Research Experience Survey, which took place in 2011, revealed that over 82 per cent of our research students who took part said their overall experience with us had met or exceeded their expectations.

Excellent facilities for work and play We pride ourselves on providing cutting-edge resources to ensure that you can make the most of your studies. Our first-class facilities include award-winning accommodation, a library with more than one million books, a business hub, extensive indoor and outdoor facilities for sports, a variety of restaurants, bars and clubs, an art gallery and theatres.
Our University enjoys a great reputation for the campus-based experience that we offer our students, providing opportunities for participation in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, engagement in an amazing range of student clubs and societies, and an extensive programme of student volunteering and sport.
