What will I learn?


In this module the five core elements of laboratory management are covered, ie i) Leadership; ii) The Pathology Regulatory and Health and Safety Environment; iii) Management of Operations – Financial, Business and Project; iv) Pathology Information Technology; and v) Integrated Management.


Leadership is a core area of management. This module introduces the key concepts relating to management generally and specifically to clinical laboratories. Learning management knowledge is a feature of all the module topics with the development of specific skills and qualities enabling participants to access resources for ongoing learning.


Regulation has become increasingly prominent in pathology and, with quality management and health and safety management, is covered in this module.


Effective financial management supports an effective organisation, expressing in financial terms all its activities. Business and project management seeks to provide an objective framework for ensuring appropriate decisions are made and carried through to timely completion.


Pathology is dependent on information technology to function. This lecture will explore all aspects from microprocessor-dependent technology to patient administration system integration.


Integrating all facets of management is an essential skill for pathology managers. This workshop will provide scenarios to enable participants to develop their ability to integrate the knowledge and skills learnt during this module.


To pass this module, you must be able to:  demonstrate a knowledge of the key concepts of leadership;


 demonstrate an understanding and critically evaluate the role of the pathology regulatory, quality management and health and safety;


 discuss the importance of effective financial management;


 discuss the role of information technology in the functioning of the pathology department; and


 develop the ability to integrate knowledge and skills related to the aforementioned facets of management.


How is the module structured? Ten, two-hour sessions comprising of lectures, seminars, discussions and workshops.


How will I be assessed? This module is assessed by means of coursework (weighted 50 per cent) and a three-hour written examination (weighted 50 per cent), which takes place in May or June.


Is there funding available? This module is included in the University’s CPD portfolio. Funding might be available from your employer and the NHS East of England.


What career opportunities are there? All practising biomedical scientists must be registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC). As a condition of HPC registration, all members of the registered workforce have to provide evidence that they participate in a CPD scheme. Those who obtain a Masters via credit accumulation will have the chance to progress with their career as such a qualification is a requirement for moving into more senior positions within the NHS.


Additional external recognition of the module by the Chartered Institute of Management, leading to the award of a Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership for successful candidates, has been obtained.
