This programme is designed for experienced professionals who are seeking a Doctorate-level qualification that integrates expert practice with research. Awarded in named areas of health and social care such as practice, education or management, this programme is designed to enable you to develop and demonstrate expertise within your chosen field. It is studied flexibly, taking between four and seven years, with decisions about the duration of the study period based upon your individual needs and funded support.
Professional Doctorates are available in a wide range of areas within our School, including practice, education and management:
Practice: Clinical Psychology; Counselling Psychology; Nursing; Occupational Therapy; Physiotherapy; Public Health (Health Visiting); Social Care Practice Management; and Speech and Language Therapy.
(DCTC) offers 16 fully-funded ESRC studentships across 21 doctoral pathways.
A doctoral pathway is the term used to describe the routes to postgraduate study, whether this is one-year Masters followed by three years of doctoral research (1+3), or three years of doctoral research (+3) for those who have already completed a relevant Masters degree (from another ESRC-accredited DTC or one with a substantial methodological element).
We have 21 doctoral pathways that are arranged into nine themed clusters. Two of these are in the area of health. There is a DTC in Health and Organisational Research (offered in collaboration with Essex Business School) and another DTC in Health Research (offered in collaboration with our Institute for Social and Economic Research). For further information on these two programmes, please visit our website.
