Why study therapeutic communication and therapeutic organisations at Essex? These distinctive courses are only provided at our University. The child and adolescent course combines understanding of children’s emotional, social and educational difficulties with insight into what contributes to making organisations dealing with troubled children more therapeutic. Similarly, the adult course combines understanding of emotional, social, relationship and behavioural difficulties in troubled, vulnerable and/or challenging adults with insight into what contributes to making organisations dealing with this client group more therapeutic.

What will I learn? You learn the basics of psychodynamic understanding of both individuals and groups/organisations. You also learn how to apply psychodynamically informed observational and other techniques in your workplace.

By studying our child and adolescent course you gain knowledge about the emotional roots of children’s difficulties, and how better to manage the impact of these problems on those working with the children. By studying our adult course you learn about the underlying roots of emotional, social, relationship and behavioural difficulties, and how better to manage the impact of these problems on those working with these clients.

How will I be assessed? You are required to complete essays following each seminar module, online tests and formative workplace assessment. There are examinations in the BA third-year top-up.
