L-S-B has announced the successful completion of a major modernisation project undertaken at Qatar TV, in which the company’s IP-based Virtual Studio Manager (VSM), was implemented to function as the universal control system. The project, for the Qatari
Television Support and Development Committee (TVSDC), began in January 2012, with Sony Professional Solutions MEA handling
systems integration.
Among the extensive facilities now complete at the Doha Broadcast Centre are an MCR, CAR, a 450 square metre news studio, and 1013 square metre production studio and edit studios. Two OB trucks are also included.
VSM is used to centralise and simplify operation of the MCR’s Miranda NVision routers, three Sony MVS8000 switchers, three Lawo mc266 digital audio mixing consoles and a Riedel intercom system. VSM handles

By David Fox Rotolight’s Anova LED floodlight has been upgraded to Version 2. The Anova EcoFlood Bi-Colour LED system now boasts enhanced colour rendering and brighter output.
The Anova family is claimed to be the most eco-friendly system on the market delivering
1000W tungsten equivalent output for just 38W
consumption, so each light can be powered by a standard V- Lock or GoldMount battery for up to four hours, making it ideal for location or ENG operation. Rotolight has developed a new LED system for the V2 Anova ‘that gives ‘best in class’ colour rendition and enhanced output’. The Bi-Colour Anova is electronically colour-adjustable from 3150K up to 6300K.

The complete range is available as either an UltraWide (110º beam angle) soft light or with a Standard 50º beam angle for greater straight-line output. All Anovas can be controlled by DMX or
all tally and UMD requirements, tieline and router control management, monitor wall setup, audio routing control and modular gear parameter control.
L-S-B said the VSM system was fully redundant, incorporating VSM’s
unique server cluster logic. A variety of VSM LCD and rotary control panels are deployed, including three VSM LBP51 panels, 12 LBP33e panels, three LBP 17 panels and three LBPB-32 Sony-style panels which are used as emergency switcher panels.

Addressing the issues of piracy

With content security a hot topic – again – at IBC, a white paper commissioned by exhibitor Irdeto and recently published by Farncombe is likely to be of interest.
The white paper is designed to help the TV industry understand and address the complexities involved in securing content in the new multiscreen OTT environment using DRM solutions, and focuses on the recent shift in the TV market towards them. It assesses the main drivers for this change, taking an in-depth look at the business and technology implications for operators seeking to adopt a DRM approach.
The white paper highlights the differences between content protection solutions using DRM or Conditional Access in terms of the way in which they are sold, the bundling of associated services and their use of mandated hardware- based proprietary
scrambling algorithms. The paper also argues that the standard DRM business model leaves responsibility for implementation and maintenance of security in the hands of the operator or OEM, leaving a gap in the market for security solution providers to fill – but only when that gap is properly identified and understood. “In today’s TV everywhere landscape, the complexity of content distribution is increasing exponentially, and piracy is evolving at an even faster rate,” said Andrew Wajs, chief technology officer, Irdeto. “It is more critical and difficult than ever for pay media companies and content owners to protect their valuable assets and investments against emerging threats, as the impact on their business is often global and immediate.” 1.D51
