102 Friday 13.09.13 theibcdaily Stepping stones to the cloud Opinion

Inevitably, cloud technology is now upon us says Chris Shaw, EVP, sales & marketing, Cobalt Digital

Very much in its infancy, there are many concerns about cloud that operators need to consider, including: how to implement, maximise its benefits, and carefully consider how to successfully use it as a revenue source. In this age of multi-screen

users via tablets and smart phones, cloud technology appears to provide a path to deliver an all-round video experience to the end-user clamouring for available material. There are still many steps to be taken in perfecting and securing cloud technology, but it is here and cannot be un- invented. Manufacturers, operators and broadcasters can only ignore the cloud at their own peril. There is much to learn and

IBC provides many stepping- stones on the road to using and implementing cloud technology. At IBC2013, Cobalt Digital is

focusing on our core technology. We will be demonstrating a range of our multi-featured, multi-functional terminal gear and throw-down modules providing solutions for today’s broadcast challenges; many of the products on exhibition were requested by our customers to meet their specific needs. The 9084 Colour Correction

card from our Compass range will be highlighted along with the complementary OGCP- 9000/CC Control Panel. Together they provide a fast, intuitive and accurate method of colour correction for live events. In addition, this year Cobalt has added ‘Timecode Insertion and Burn In’ to Compass cards, and offers it as a downloadable option to the Fusion3G line. The 9223 MPEG-4 encoder, now available as both a card and a standalone unit, has been

enhanced with several upgrades including FEC SMPTE 2022 and AAC-LC Stereo Channel. Our Fusion3G cards are now

available with Dolby Digital+ amongst other audio options, including multiple loudness processing (various combinations of 5.1 and 2.0) and up-mixing. Complete Dolby transcode is provided on a single card in the form of Dolby encode and decode for Dolby E, Dolby Digital and now Dolby Digital+. Cobalt is introducing the

European market to our new OBSIDIAN3G line of cards at IBC this year. The latest OBSIDIAN3G Down-Converter provides quality down conversion, economy and extreme density with 20 Dual cards fitting into a single 2RU HPF-9000 frame. That’s 40 down conversions in a single frame! Ideal for the outside

broadcaster of today. In addition to the terminal

gear cards above, Cobalt Digital continues to expand the range of Fibre units, both in card and throw-down module format. Quad CWDM Transmit and Receive units are available in card form, and the Blue Box Group throw-down modules now include transmit, receive and fibre regeneration units.

And of course, Cobalt is

delighted to show the upgraded version of our Spotcheck loudness unit that now includes monitoring and logging of numerous video parameters. Our customers’ challenges drive the growth of our product lines. We listen to their requests, and respond in a timely manner with price-pleasing, effective solutions. 10.B44
