To ensure efficiencies you need to consolidate playout, automation, graphics and signal processing onto a single platform says Micky Edwards, vice president Sales EMEA, Miranda Technologies
For the uninitiated, Miranda Technologies, a Belden Brand, is a global provider of integrated solutions for production, playout and delivery systems for television broadcasters and multi-system operators. As such, we’re exceptionally well positioned to share expertise that spans the near-gamut of broadcast technology. It’s virtually a given that the
buzz at IBC will centre around 4K, and rightly so. We already support this technological leap with products and services that will enable broadcasters and filmmakers to accelerate their transition. However, we mustn’t forget
that much of the world is still continuing the migration to SDI, either SD or HD, and many substantial markets, in fact entire continents, are coming to grips with channel proliferation to meet an insatiable demand for content. The challenge is to complete
the transition to file-based technologies and/or add channels while keeping costs under control. Our iTX integrated playout
solution has already enabled many to cost effectively make that transition. More than 1500 channels are on air around the world with iTX, and that number is growing daily. However, we think a great many more broadcasters and playout facilities could benefit from iTX if they felt they had access to the workflow efficiencies and asset management tools that are already helping so many to keep their overheads down. There has been a perception
that iTX was the bespoke preserve of major multi-channel playout facilities and regional and national broadcasters. I admit that there was a kernel of truth in that, until now. At IBC2013 we’re kicking off
a major breakthrough that will offer smaller EMEA playout
facilities, speciality channel providers and regional broadcasters increased scalability, outstanding resilience, streamlined infrastructures, more efficient workflows and much faster channel launch times. For the first time, Miranda is
offering new, preconfigured iTX packages through our ‘iTX Gold Dealer Program’ an initiative designed to enable qualified Miranda EMEA dealers to simplify access to iTX by working directly with facilities in their respective regions to select, install and service a predetermined iTX package that is right for them. What this means is that
facilities can get channels to air, with confidence, much, much faster – often in as little as two days or less. The iTX packages we are
announcing at IBC will be of interest to many delegates because too many are having to move content using a plethora
Workflows in mind Workflow Solutions
With the move to file-based infrastructures, the chance to develop automated workflows is now being seized upon by broadcasters and production facilities everywhere. IBC is reflecting that with presentations and debates in the IBC Workflow Solutions theatre in Hall 9. From today until Monday,
there is a full programme of presentations in the theatre, and if you are part of the new IBC2013 Workflow Connexions
Club, an opportunity each day to network with fellow workflow specialists over drinks. Like all the special presentation areas inside the exhibition, these sessions are free and part of IBC’s aim of adding value to the time all attendees spend here. Today the programme starts with a presentation from Advanced Media Workflow Association. AMWA is one of the drivers behind FIMS, the emerging standard which looks set to make open service- oriented architectures practical, and which received a Special Award at IBC2012.
The AMWA session starts at 11:00, and is followed by networking drinks. At 13:00 the programme continues with presentations by leading delivery specialist Aspera, and a look at the work Softvallée did with news broadcaster France 24 to speed the production and delivery of news around the world. IBC Workflow Solutions is just one of a number of free specialist areas in the exhibition. IBC Production Insights, in Hall 11 is a dedicated area where you can get hands-on experience with the latest cameras from Canon, Hitachi
and JVC, together with a new lightweight rig from Stereotec. The studio set is lit by Canara LED lighting fixtures, including Fresnels as well as panels, giving you a chance to see how these low-power, low-heat fixtures compare with traditional lamps. Representatives of the
Micky Edwards: ‘A compelling proposition’
of devices and systems that don’t always play nicely together. If you want to cut costs and ensure efficiency, you need to consolidate playout, automation, graphics and signal processing onto a single platform, which of course is what you get with iTX. We firmly believe this new
approach to making iTX more easily accessible to all is a compelling proposition that
evaporates the notion that iTX is just a high-end solution. iTX can fit into any playout environment you need it to. Of course, multi-viewers,
routers, signal processing, fibre-based connectivity and even subtitling and closed captioning can factor into the iTX equation, all of which we know an awful lot about… and 4K too. 8.D41
