This provides multiple
conversion and analysis of Ultra HD TV and digital cinema signals in current and
anticipated 4K video formats up to 4096x2160/60p, allowing manufacturers, designers, researchers, broadcast stations, networks, outside broadcast units and systems integrators to build, test and commission 4K products and systems. Analyser features include
proxy image, SDI eye and jitter measurement, video status, ANC monitoring, Safe Title & Action cage insertion, and gamut monitoring. Conversion capabilities include up-, down- and cross-conversion; user- controlled 3G/HD/SD pan & scan from a 4K input; dynamic

crop & zoom; and 6-axis colour correction. The 4K Tool Box also includes a signal generator capable of generating video from 4K stills and moving test patterns, SDI jitter insertion and uncompressed video capture & play-out. The 4K Tool Box has ports supporting a variety of connection formats – multi-rate SDI, HDMI and Display Port - for both video source and display. Conversion
between connection and image formats allows operation in multiformat design environments, while eye and jitter analysis features are aimed at helping system designers to rapidly locate sources of signal error in SDI signal paths up to 6G-SDI. User control is displayed either on the HDMI output overlay or over IP for remote browser control, for example using a wireless tablet. 6.A18
Shedding light on dynamic range

High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging is the technique of capturing a far wider range of colours and lighting detail than is possible with existing camera technology. While a number of mobile devices including the Apple iPhone, have an HDR video mode, the output is not an HDR stream which prevents the detail in the footage from being examined further. Moreover, to capture the full range of light within a scene can result in eyewateringly large data. A single uncompressed HDR frame requires 24MB,
which results in 42GB for a minute of footage at 1080p/ 30fps, compared to just 10GB for a minute of normal footage. Attempts to produce practical HDR video content to date have used tone mapping which allows more lighting levels in the scene to be captured, but it’s a one-way process with no way to resurrect the information. Now researchers, led by Warwick University, say they’ve cracked the conundrum. Using low-cost kit including DSLRs they recently recorded a US space rocket launch in 20 f- stops and 30 fps. The results of that, and a full post processing and display pipeline, are on show at IBC’s R&D section Future Zone. 8.G49

Conversion gear manufacturer Cobalt Digital is showing a host of new and enhanced signal processing cards. Included is a new series of terminal gear cards called Obsidian3G as well as improvements to both its 9084 Compass HD/SD-SDI RGB colour correction card and its Spotcheck audio loudness
measurement and recorded data logging system. Obsidian3G debuts with a down-converter series that combines low power with a high-density design and the potential to include 20 cards per frame in a dual-channel unit. Features include 3G/HD/SD- SDI input, frame sync, SDI re-clocking, SD-SDI and analogue video/audio outputs. The cards can also auto-detect and down convert SMPTE 425/292/259M formats,
perform aspect ratio conversion and can pan and zoom. The Obsidian3G cards on show today are the 9501- DCDA-3G, the 9501-DCDA-HD and the 9502-DCDA-3G. The improvements to Spotcheck include enhanced compliance monitoring and logging capabilities. The newest version, Spotcheck-2016, can handle up to 16 video channels containing up to 32 audio channels and monitors, meters and logs loudness compliance
over extended time-periods. Following the updates, it now supports H.264, MPEG-2, MP1L2, DD, and AAC codecs and includes live audio meters, thumbnails, transport stream manager and ASI gateway. At the same time, Cobalt’s 9084 Compass HD/SD-SDI RGB colour correction card has also been updated and now offers realtime adjustment features that can be made from the its OGCP-9000/CC remote control panel. 9084 offers
RGB-space colour correction with YcbCr proc features and frame sync for HD/SD-SDI video streams. Also on show are fibre units for Cobalt’s recently released Blue Box Group throw-down modular bricks
