SMPTE will put itself at the cutting edge of UHD TV exploitation on Sunday with the release of its study group look at the UHD eco chain. It is also planning projects on a perceptual electro optical transfer function, and on LED lighting. “The eco chain group
investigated the technological gaps we face today when wanting to roll out UHD TV services,” said SMPTE engineering VP Hans Hoffmann. “It concentrated on the professional domain, but also looked at what is happening in distribution and the consumer environment.
“This is a key achievement for SMPTE, and will point towards
the development of new standards – in particular for infrastructures,” he added. “We see two streams. One is to meet short-term requirements, which are met by further enhancements to SDI-based interfaces, and the other is the mid-term, beyond three years, when we need to have everything networked.” This is complex because SMPTE will have to deal with asynchronous networks, which will mostly be IP-based but could be AVB-based.
“They need to be equipped with particular protocols which allow synchronous transfer,” said Hoffmann. “And then we come into the area of essence and the content bindings. Essence is behind the EOTF project, which will include all the metadata required

covered by ITU and SMPTE documents, and higher dynamic

The Ark Post Production has integrated Quantum’s Lattus-M object storage and StorNext appliances for its asset management workflow. The London-based facility maintains two sites in Soho that manage the duplication, conversion,
encoding, transcoding and editing of digital media, and it needed technology to support a multi-petabyte archive. Additionally, content creators
and video editors needed to access and share content across a variety of editing and VFX applications, such as Final Cut Pro and Avid Media Composer, where each toolset is supported by different operating systems.

offering a first look at its latest products for the connected home. These will include the Px39, the company’s first HEVC Media
Server. Using a Broadcom chipset, it will support HEVC 4K/p60 Ultra HD video. The Px39 features eight tuners to offer multi-room HEVC/AVC streaming to multiple connected devices over standard WiFi.
Also new for IBC2013 is a HEVC mobile set-top box, the Px36, or SVELTE box. The portable Android-based box is WiFi enabled to allow users to access TV Everywhere services on their mobile devices over 4G LTE.

based Quantum certified reseller, The Ark chose StorNext and Lattus products, including Lattus-M, which integrates object storage technology with StorNext Storage Manager. Quantum claims that Lattus-M offers self-healing and self-protection capabilities, and enables automatic multi-site protection without the need for replication. The configuration also

“This has to do with protecting the content in a certain way, and it brings in another study group (CIMM) aimed at protecting professional video and commercials,” said Hoffmann. “This is a very complex field, so we would first like to discover what is feasible to be standardised.” CIMM – the Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement – has teamed up with SMPTE for the adoption of Ad-ID and the Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR) coding for all advertising and video content assets. SMPTE’s joint task force with the EBU and the Video Services Forum (VSF) around the subject of network media has released a request for technology here at IBC. 8.F51f

The panel integration with Adobe Premiere Pro CC features multi-channel crash and gang recording while retaining the program’s growing file support.
