theibcdaily Friday 13.09.13 31 Will new technology sell more popcorn? IBC Big Screen

Given that the IBC Big Screen, with its state-of-the-art projection and audio equipment lies at the heart of the RAI complex, it’s only natural that there should be an extremely healthy cinema strand running through the IBC Conference. “To see the difference between HD and Ultra HD you have to be standing quite close to the screen,” says Wendy Aylsworth, SVP Technology, Warner Bros. “With dynamic range and broader colours, you can actually see those across the

room. I think the next most obvious change that the consumer can perceive are frame rate differences.” Aylsworth leads an enquiry into whether new cinema technology will ‘Sell More Popcorn’ (Monday, 09:00- 12:30), especially as improvements are being pushed through without the universal standards of the original digital deployment. The peerless panel includes RealD, Texas Instruments and Sony Digital Cinema. There is also an examination of Immersive Audio (Monday, 13:30-15:00) with presentations from Dolby, NHK and Barco.

which will ask what the new technology will mean for sound designers, exhibitors, and cinema goers — and ultimately home cinema enthusiasts and broadcasters – 35 years after Dolby launched 5.1 with Superman.

And with 3D still healthier in the cinema than in the home, the Cinema @ IBC strand then turns its attention to 2D-3D conversion (Monday, 15:30- 17:00) and asks whether it is a technology that has finally come of age. Has it?

Cinematographers, producers, directors and more can find out that answer at the IBC Big Screen.
