TC Electronic By Paul Watson
Receiving its world debut today is UpCon, TC Electronic’s cinema- quality up-converter which
guarantees that broadcasters’ transmissions will always be optimised for 5.1 HDTV. According to the company, UpCon is an up-conversion and downmix processor in a 1RU case, which continuously monitors the channel format of
the incoming audio. If the signal falls back from a true 5.1-to- stereo, it cross-fades into a convincing 5.1 surround up- conversion without adding any interruptions or artifacts. UpCon is based on UnWrap HD and shares its ultra-low
latency as well as its overkill processing resolution, the manufacturer claims. The hardware is based on the TC DB6 platform and UpCon offers the same extended control possibilities. It can detect the incoming signal
channel format automatically and offers extensive GPI control. It can also be set up to react to incoming metadata. UpCon comes with one 3G
SDI stream as standard, but can be expanded with one or two optional transmission 3G cards for a total of three simultaneous SDI streams. This makes it, TC says, the ultimate cost-effective, high- density solution.
In addition, UpCon comes with dual low-noise fans, dual fuses and dual power inlets for feeding the unit from two independent power sources. This way, broadcasters are virtually risk-free of losing signal while on air; and if one of the power sources should fail, notification can be given using GPIO or SNMP traps. 8.D56
Pyramix V8.1
debuts today Merging Technologies
By Paul Watson
The latest version of Merging Technologies’ Pyramix, V8.1 boasts a number of
advancements over V8.0, the company says. Firstly, it boasts 44.1kHz to DSD256 recording capability, as well as multiple, Post FX Background Recorders, which Merging claims is ‘a phenomenally flexible way to record multiple sources’. Other enhancements include Record Pre-Buffering, which means users should never miss the start of a recording again;
Edit/Mix/Master (while in Record), so as soon as a recording has started, users can drag it onto their timeline and start working; Take Logger/Metadata Window, which is a single location for all users’ session information; and Media Based Markers, whereby a ‘Mark’ takes and rates performances and stores them in the media file which will be ‘stuck’ to the take even after editing. Pyramix V8.1 also boasts Ravenna-to-ASIO device bridging, which is the real ‘killer feature’, says the manufacturer. Using the secondary bridge means that local monitoring and talkback can be implemented when Merging’s Horus is being used as a remote stagebox, which results in an easy-to-achieve and cost-effective solution that can only be achieved with Audio over IP. 8.E96
