GER Michael Smith and his wife, Sandra, visited Indianapolis, INDIANA, to attend the spring convention of the Indiana Elks Association. During the visit, the first couple were present for a program on the state major project, which supports cancer research at Purdue University’s Purdue Cancer Center and at the Indiana University Cancer Research Institute. The GER also had the opportunity to present scholarships to about 60 scholarship recipients and met Gabrielle Reed, Miss Indiana 2010, who earned her music performance degree with the help of an Indiana Elks scholarship. l GER Michael Smith and his wife, Sandra, traveled to Tempe, ARIZONA, to attend the spring meeting of the Arizona Elks Associa- tion. At the convention’s Friday night banquet, the GER focused on membership, relating stories of effective membership strategies he had learned at successful lodges during his travels. GER Smith also had the privilege of presenting awards to the Arizona Elks Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, Firefighter of the Year, Drug Enforce- ment Officer of the Year, and the state’s top two scholarship winners. GER Michael Smith and his wife, Sandra, trav- eled to VIRGINIA as guests of the Virginia Elks Association. They opened their visit with a tour of Naval Station Norfolk, which is the world’s largest naval station and supports 75 ships and more than 130 aircraft. The first couple then moved on to the spring convention of the Virginia Elks Asso- ciation in Chesapeake. During the convention, Mayor Alan Krasnoff presented GER Smith with the key to the City of Chesapeake, making the GER only the second person ever to receive that honor. The first couple also shared lunch with the fami- lies of more than 40 young men and women who had received scholarships from the Elks National Foundation and the Virginia Elks Association.
